The sport of Boxing is mourning yet again with the 2nd death in the sport in a weeks time.
After losing fighter Maxim Dadashev of Russia (28yrs old) Tuesday who died after suffering brain injuries in a loss to Subriel Matias on Friday in Maryland, has lost another fighter this week. Argentinian boxer Hugo Santillan died Thursday from injuries suffered in a split-decision draw with Eduardo Javier Abreu on Saturday in Argentina. He was 23. Santillan collapsed during the announcement of the result from the WBC Latino Silver Lightweight Title fight and subsequently underwent emergency surgery for a blood clot on his brain, per TMZ. A statement from a surgeon goes as follows.
"Upon admission to the hospital, he had successive kidney failures and he did not come out of his coma," the doctor said. "He had swelling of his brain and he never recovered consciousness. The swelling continued to worsen and it affected the functioning of the rest of his organs."
With this being the second death in just the past 3 days will this spark change within the sport? Or will we continue to ignore the possibilities, and hope for the best outcome with a great & brutal show?
